From Assumption to Awareness: Rethinking Workplace Communication

I recently had the opportunity to conduct a two-day Coaching and Facilitation Workshop at Philips, centred on one of the most fundamental professional capabilities—communication.

What made these two days truly meaningful was not just the content, but the quality of engagement in the room. Thoughtful participation, honest reflection, generous idea exchange, and a shared willingness to examine everyday communication patterns turned the workshop into a genuine learning experience—for everyone involved, including me.

Across the journey, we reflected on how communication often breaks not because of poor intent, but because of assumptions, unspoken expectations, and the quiet gap between what is said and what is understood.

The conversations gradually moved toward building clarity and professional presence, listening with depth, responding with empathy, navigating difficult conversations, and communicating with confidence across levels of leadership—while also touching upon the self-awareness that frameworks like Transactional Analysis can bring to everyday interactions.

More than techniques, the dialogue repeatedly returned to a simple realization:

Effective communication begins with awareness—of self, of others, and of the space between intent and impact.

Grateful to the participants for their openness, and to the Philips team and Dhananjoy Baruah for creating an environment where reflection, learning, and meaningful dialogue were truly possible.
